Once you do accept that the premise is more than a little corny, “Video Makers” rewards you with a solid comedic story that anyone who ever made a movie can relate to. BMO’s way of turning the camera lens back on them is also a fairly clever and satisfying way to resolve the problem. Finn and Jake’s upset may be foolish and childish, but people can get sensitive about their artwork. To be fair, it’s a very common conflict in our reality, and I think “Video Makers” depicts it with such a core of genuine love that my heart can accept the premise. Two friends fight over some kind of project before being reminded that friendship is more important. Yeah, we’ve seen this sort of story many times before.

The plot feels very much like a minor variation on an old cartoon cliché, but it’s told in such a distinct way that I can’t damn it as old hat. “Video Makers” is sort of a weird egg, halfway clinging to the past of Adventure Time and halfway plunging into its future.
